Find out more about Father’s Day in Australia, traditions and great gifts ideas for your hero!

Father’s Day is one of the dates that are celebrated internationally, in some countries it is celebrated on March 19th  by Catholic tradition, but in European countries, such as France or the United Kingdom, it is celebrated on the third Sunday in June the same as in the US and also, most Ibero-American countries. However, in Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and  Papua New Guinea is held on 6 September.

Knowing why we celebrate this date for our grandparents, uncles, a person who plays the role of biological parents is one of the best ways to remember all the good they have done for us over several years and how unconditional they have been in the course of our lives.

The idea of celebrating Father’s Day came from an American woman named Sonora Smart Dodd in 1910. She wanted to honour her father with great pride, because he had taken care of her and her five brothers alone and without any help, on a farm in Washington. Sonora took the initiative when she heard a sermon in the Church on Mother’s Day and proposed that this day will be celebrated on June 5, which was her father’s birthday.

Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of celebrating Father’s Day nationwide in 1924, however, until 1966 it was officially declared the date for the third Sunday of June in the US by President Lyndon Johnson. This event was so important that it spread in various parts of the world with different dates and traditions, making it one of the most relevant days to show all grandparents, great-grandparents and parents how much they mean to their children and family members.

What is the best tradition to celebrate Father’s Day?

Many Australians celebrate Father’s Day with their family and friends in the park, cinemas, zoos or other places of interest, as is done in several places around the world. But also, in the State of Victoria, where it is a very important celebration date, in 32 municipalities they have the tradition of choosing the best father of the community and celebrate together. In other parts of the world, such as in Catholic countries, they have a tradition of sharing with families, preparing dinner or lunch for those who have been the paternal part of the home.

In Anglo-Saxon countries, as in most parts of the world, Father’s Day is celebrated in summer, with the third Sunday in June. Depending on where we are in these countries, we can find the tradition of celebrating with common activities to share gifts to parents and celebrate with family. But there are also symbolic celebrations related to local tradition, as they do in South America, where they set fires in city centres for parents to challenge each other and pass them in a single jump. In France and the UK, there is a tradition of giving a rose as a symbol of appreciation or affection for parents, being a similar way to celebrate as if it were Valentine’s Day, with gifts such as flowers, chocolates or cakes.

There are so many traditions around the world that no matter where you are or how far away you are, remember that the main thing is to share in the best way possible with your loved ones and let them know how much you appreciate them. How to celebrate Father’s Day in a special way?

Most people consider their father as a ‘hero’ to be admired. But how could we make this day more than special? There are many memories, unique and incomparable stories that we have with them, but if you make them live a new experience with you or in the distance, you will really make a totally enjoyable day. For example with my dad Marc, we always have the habit of celebrating together, regardless of the situation. These dates are a priority as is his birthday, so I always do everything possible to be with him and make him have fun or live a different experience every time.

My father taught me to be sympathetic and explained to me that if at some point I couldn’t have what I wanted, the only important thing was to share and give special moments but with a lot of love. So if you want to celebrate in a different and fun way with your dad, we invite you to visit HobbieHub, a place where he can learn everything he loves and share with people from different parts of the world.
